Welcome back to ignorance. Every young director should be happy that Dianne Wiest and David Oyelowo has accepted roles in their first film. Pain and guilt
Written and directed
by Maris Curran, this is the story of two people coping with grief and guilt,
but unable to share the burden because they cannot overcome their feelings.
When a woman dies in a car accident, her husband Sherwin (David Oyelowo) and
mother Lucinda (Dianne Wiest) are devastated. Sherwin tries to quell his
depression by drinking constantly and eventually accepts Lucinda's invitation
to visit her in rural Maine (far from his home in Atlanta).
Overall humble and charming
The two never got along very well and it turns out they both had a strained relationship with his late wife/daughter. What follows are several awkward dinners and conversations, punctuated by many awkward minutes of silence.... or cruel remarks from Lucinda, who has cancer. The extremely modest and charming Rosie Perez is the least unpleasant in her limited role as Lucinda's sister (and Sherwin's confidante).
The struggle to cope
Few things are more
pointless than competing over who deserves more pain. Lucinda says in this film
that fatherhood brings out the worst in people, and this applies to grief as
well. These two characters are not at their best as they try to deal with the
holes they now have in their lives.
Who among us has ever suffered a loss?
"It should have been me" is not an uncommon thought for those who have suffered the loss of a loved one. Especially if they are haunted by the past. The sacrifice of solitude and intimacy
While Ms. Wiest and Mr. Oyelowo were talented, it would
have been nice if the script had been more suspenseful and director Curran had
been able to limit the sharp close-ups without sacrificing loneliness and
intimacy. It's also a good look at the grieving process and how deeply many
people hold these emotions.
