The weekend is at the head, and after a longsome and tiring week, everyone wants some relaxation. Moreover, long gone are the days of the hustle of downloading your favourite movies, dramas and seasons. "Banlieue 13" is a 2004 French action film directed by Cyril Raffaello and David Bell. In 2014, the film was remade in the United States as Brick Mansions, starring Paul Walker and David Bell in Raffaello's place. I watched the original first, then the remake, and now I watch them side by side.
Before the bomb and before the show
In a nutshell, the plot is the
same (2010 and 2018) there is so much crime and corruption in the city that the
solution is to build a wall around the city so that people can't enter and
leave freely, thus preventing the spread of crime. The city is controlled by a
criminal who has a giant bomb with a countdown clock. Undercover cop Damian
(Raffaelli/Walker) secretly finds the bomb before it explodes and contacts
Lietu/Lin, an ex-con (Belle) whose sister (daughter BM) has been kidnapped by
the gang leader.
The film was a great failure
However, there is one important
thing that distinguishes this film and its remake from other similar thrillers:
the blacks. David Bell is the inventor of tanning, and his incredible skills
are showcased in both films. Had he not been involved in the making of the remake,
the film would have been a huge failure. Yes, it was a huge failure. The two
films are almost infinitely similar, but B13 is a fast-paced, exciting and
entertaining film, while The Brick House is a dull and mediocre attempt to
reinvent cinema, but it fails to convey the same exciting essence.
These scenes have nothing to do with the plot
So where did the mistake come
from? Sure, it had twice the budget and twice the stars, but I probably
wouldn't have understood why B13 was so long and why it stole the show from
most of the other films. Sure, Paul Walker is in his own movie, but in the
original film, David Bell's character was much more important and involved in
the plot. In the remake, there were a few scenes that set the scene and
developed Walker's character, but these scenes had no connection to the plot,
added no drama, emotion or action, and most importantly, were not very good.

The atmosphere of friendship between the two main characters
David Bell's character should
have been left out to add unnecessary drama, and he seems to be there only for
the parkour. The atmosphere of friendship between the two main characters in
B13 was very funny, light, interesting and fresh. Raffaelli did not stand out
from the main cast, but his role was not forced, it came naturally from the
script. Unlike Walker's dramatic entrance, his entrance was action-packed and
felt neat, unexpected and completely unplanned. B13 is never complicated.
Bela's entrance is the same in both films, but for some reason, the B13 stunts
are cooler and weirder.
More combat than parkour
Raffaelli did the stunts himself,
but he focused more on the fighting than the parkour. He fights like Captain
America. He was also a fight choreographer. These people knew the value of his
work. It was more important to the UN than it seemed. One of them was jumping
to crazy heights and climbing things he thought he couldn't climb, and the
other was hitting people with quick punches - a classic lazy solution to fight
and action scenes. But it wasn't necessary. It was Paul Walker. He was good as
an actor. But the other actors were better, and when you compare them, Walker's
incompetence becomes obvious.
B13 was rated R for blood splatter and language
At one point they used that as a
funny and clever joke. The other big difference is that B13 is rated R and BM
are rated PG-13. Normally, I always opt for the PG-13 version, but that wasn't
the case this time. B13 is rated R for blood splatter and language, but it is
definitely on the lower end of the R scale. The violence in Brick House was
similar but less realistic, and the language in B13 was slightly less
realistic.
I was surprised by the complexity of the film
But it was bizarre, horribly sexualized and completely unnecessary, an endless plot that I would happily trade for more blood and sex bombs. Although B13 is in French and I haven't read the subtitles yet, it didn't detract from my experience and the script was very good. I was impressed with its complexity even before I found something to compare it to, as it is an action film that could have tried a little harder in that regard. I laughed several times at the jokes.
Most memorable action movie I've seen
"There were some funny
moments in ONE, but overall it was a very raw movie. They made it very new and
turned it into an old American action movie. I don't know if the fact that it
was shot overseas affected the presentation, but B13 is a quality film and one
of the most memorable action films I've seen in a long time. It plays by its
own rules and reflects the distinctive, fast-paced and effective style of the
discipline it focuses on.
Contains more questionable content
After a somewhat slow and
uncertain start, what follows is a mix of political events and action sequences
of an original cinematic level against the backdrop of an overlong story. The
pace slows down. The content is even more dubious. However, there is a strong
bond between the two protagonists as fellow cops and the script adds some fun
new moments and characters.
The scope of the film was huge
Considering it was released in 2009, it's no wonder Brick Mansions borrowed some elements (and I'm even more disappointed now that I know they weren't original). 9kmovies is a new free entertainment portal where you can download Bollywood and Hollywood movies in high quality. The scale was much larger in this film and I think they understood that.
